Guwahati: The All India Gorkha League (AIGL) has announced its unconditional support for Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) candidate Kunki Chowdhury for the 36th Guwahati Central constituency, backing her candidature as part of the broader opposition alliance.

In a press release issued by its Assam State Committee, the organisation said the decision followed โ€œcareful considerationโ€ of candidates in the fray, asserting that Chowdhury represents a blend of academic competence, youthful vision, and inclusive politics.

Highlighting her credentials, the AIGL pointed to Chowdhuryโ€™s academic background, including a Masterโ€™s degree in Educational Leadership from University College London (UCL) and her association with NMIMS Mumbai, stating that her exposure reflects โ€œa global perspective that the state needs.โ€

The organisation also underscored what it described as Chowdhuryโ€™s โ€œGen Z approachโ€ to politicsโ€”one that is inclusive, technology-driven, and focused on contemporary, real-world issues.

Positioning her candidature within the opposition bloc, the AIGL noted that as a nominee of the Asom Sonmilito Morcha, Chowdhury represents a united front comprising the Indian National Congress, Raijor Dal, and other allied parties. It expressed confidence that her leadership would contribute to communal harmony and inclusive development, including for the Gorkha community.

The press release also placed emphasis on Chowdhuryโ€™s familial legacy, stating that her mother, Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, belongs to a lineage with historic contributions to the nation. It noted that Babu Damber Singh Gurung, a key figure in the Gorkha movement, was the founder of the All India Gorkha League and the sole Gorkha representative in the Constituent Assembly of India, while Barrister Ari Bahadur Gurung was a signatory to the Constitution of India.

Reiterating its support, the organisation appealed to voters in Guwahati Central to back Chowdhury, describing her as โ€œthe most capable representativeโ€ to articulate the aspirations of the constituency.

โ€œThis support is unconditional and stems from our shared commitment to the development and welfare of the constituency,โ€ the statement said, urging members, supporters and the public to vote in her favour for a โ€œbright and progressive futureโ€ for Assam.
