Doomdooma: As over 2.49 crore voters set to cast their ballots across Assam on Thursday, voices from Kakopathar in Tinsukia district highlighted grassroots demands for better agriculture support, education and rural development.

โ€œWe want a government that takes care of farmers and villagers by providing quality education, jobs, business and agricultural opportunities, and a better healthcare system,โ€ said Dhanjit Moran at a polling station in Kakopathar.

Polling began at 7 a.m. across all 126 constituencies, with brisk turnout and long queues reported at several booths.

Kakopathar, located in Tinsukia district, is noted for its deep-rooted indigenous traditions and agrarian economy. The area, associated with indigenous communities, is marked by extensive paddy cultivation, which remains a key source of livelihood for residents.

The election, with 722 candidates in the fray, is widely seen as a contest between the BJP-led alliance and the Congress-led opposition.

Security has been tightened across the state to ensure smooth polling, which will continue till 6 p.m.

Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
