In the current world of smartphone addiction where continuous scrolling gives you unhealthy dopamine hits, the new generation is choosing digital detoxing over doomscrolling. Once digital detoxing was seen as a common wellness practice, it has now become a trend among Generation Z, as they are now becoming more aware of energy draining screen-time and the detrimental pressure of constant comparison.
The growing influence of social media in everyday life
The generation that grew up with the internet and social media apps like Whatsapp, Instagram, Tik Tok and Snapchat is now questioning its impact on daily life.Constant scrolling through social media feeds , endless notifications, and the bombardment of information from around the world at our fingertips have become a major part of our day to day routines. So, why is there a growing shift toward social media detoxing among the youth?
The detox trend driven by mental health concerns
One of the major reasons behind it is its depressing effect on mental health. There is no doubt that social media helps maintain connections and build communities; however excessive use can result in anxiety, insomnia, self-doubt and stress. Many studies suggest that constant exposure to social media content about celebrities, models and their lifestyles may contribute to unhealthy comparisons, low self-esteem and emotional fatigue.
Digital fatigue
Another important reason is digital fatigue. Constant bombardment of notifications and overflow of information can make an individual feel overwhelming, disrupts the attention span and concentration level. Many studies have found the new generation complaining about the feeling of mental exhaustion in order to stay up to date with the new trends , online news and controversies. Thus, screen detoxing has become a convincing way to regain one’s control over their precious time and energy.
Mindfulness beyond the screen
However, social media detoxing has its benefits beyond the realm of a good mental health. Instead of spending time online, the Gen Z is prioritizing more on self-awareness, inner-peace, hobbies, reconnecting with nature and physical reality. Spending quality time with friends, journaling, reading, exercising, and doing something creative are among the topmost activities gaining popularity as the youth is seeking a poised and meaningful way to utilize their time and energy.
The trend is also gaining its momentum through literal lifestyle changes. Some young adults are trying to break the loop of social media addiction by setting screen time limits, uninstalling certain apps, deleting or taking breaks from social media platforms.
Redefining relationship with technology
Nevertheless, digital detoxing does not mean utterly boycotting technology. For the new generation, the goal is to balance and intentional usage of digital media, not complete disconnection from it. As we all know, technology plays a vital role for work, education, entertainment and networking. Thus, the aim is to achieve its maximum benefit without becoming addicted to it.
Therefore, with the growing awareness of digital and mental health wellness, the current trend of social media detox throws light on the broader spectrum of cultural shift towards mindfulness and balance. Thus, the new generation is changing the norms of being constantly online and updated with the trends. They are setting a great example of maintaining healthy relationship with technology without getting highly dependent.
