A two-day capacity building programme on six solid waste management rules 2016 organized by National Productivity Council (NPC) concluded at City Convention Centre of Imphal in Manipur on Saturday.

The programme was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Manipur Urban Development Agency and Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD).
The six waste management rules notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change are Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016; E-waste Management Rules, 2016; Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016; Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016; Construction and Demolition Rules, 2016 and Hazardous and Other Wastes (Movement and Trans-boundary Movement) Rules, 2016.

Imphal which generates 120 tonnes of solid waste daily, becomes the first city in the Northeast to have witnessed such programme to strengthen institutional capacities at urban local bodies and amongst stakeholders, towards the efficient management of various types of wastes towards achieving improvement in general health of city environment etc.
The NPC is also planning to organize such kind of similar capacity building workshops in Dimapur in Nagaland later in the current month.

India generates 1,41,064 tonnes of waste including 495 tonnes of biomedical waste and 25,900 tonnes of plastics on a daily basis as per 2016 official records.
In the technical sessions of the first day of the programme on Friday, Swati Singh Sambyal and Sonia Henam of CSE, Delhi made presentations on solid waste, e-waste and plastic waste management rules,c2016 in India.
On the second and concluding day on Saturday, Sonia Henam who is the deputy programme manager of CSE New Delhi made presentations on bio-medical waste management rules 2016, Dinesh R Bandela also deputy programme manager of CSE New Delhi gave presentation on construction and demolition rules 2016.
Later in the post lunch session, Waikhom Rosan assistant environmental engineer of Manipur pollution control board made presentations on hazardous and other waste (management and transboundary movement) rules 2016.
It may recalled that the two-day capacity building programme on six solid waste management rules 2016 for the government officials, functionaries of municipal areas besides representatives of NGOs was inaugurated by Manipur MAHUD minister Th Shyamkumar on Friday.
