Manipur based Rainforest Club Tamenglong has been honoured for the ‘extraordinary contribution to sustainability’ during a launching function of an NGO on World Environment Day observation in Guwahati, sources said on Thursday.

Altogether 11 personalities and organizations, according to reports, were honoured with appreciation certificates and memento etc on ‘Green technology’ and ‘Sustainability’ during the launching function of the Centre for Ethics and sustainable development, a non-profit organization.

On receiving the recognition in the regional level, well wishers and supporters have been congratulating the efforts of the Rainforest Club Tamenglong through social media.

According to sources available in Imphal, the Rainforest Club Tamenglong have been doing conservation of nature for the past few years in an around Tamenglong town and villages.

“With the help of some experts from different fields, we do animals rescue and give tips on how to/what to do in times of animals rescue etc,” said a volunteer of Rainforest Club Tamenglong when contacted.

“We also conduct campaign on alternative means of livelihood and sustainability in some villages of Tamenglong district,” the Rainforest Club Tamenglong volunteer added.

Rainforest Club Tamenglong was formed in 2011 by a group of volunteers who strive for a better Tamenglong by engaging themselves in various social activities and campaigns relating to conservation of environment and wildlife in the district. The club has around 40 members and 20 patron members.

The initiatives of the RCT are supported by district administration, village authorities and other concern stakeholders.

The club also actively involved in awarding the best ward (locality) in the hill town in collaboration with Manipur forest department in connection with the World Environment Day observation on Wednesday. There are ten wards in Tamenglong town.

World Environment Day ‘Greenward Award’ was given to Tamenglong Ward Number 10 (Phunguang) with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 along with a citation for maintaining the ward green and clean.
