A man who tried to enter his name in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) using a fake voter ID card was arrested in the Dimapur area of Nagaland on Monday.

The Morigaon police arrested the accused who has been identified as Jiyabur Rahman.

Rahman used a fake voter ID as a supporting document to enroll himself in the NRC.

The fake voter ID has been discovered during a verification process carried out by the staff of Jaluguti NRC Seva Kendra in Morigaon.

The staff of the NSK later lodged a complaint on the issue of the fake voter ID in Mikirbheta Police Station.

Based on the complaint, Rahman was arrested from Dimapur by the police.

As per reports, the fake voter ID was given to the accused person by a person named Hibjur. Rahman is being currently interrogated by the police.

Many illegal migrants had tried using fake documents to get enrolled in the NRC.

Last year, Assam NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela in a report to the Supreme Court revealed how Bangladeshis tried to enter their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) using fake documents.

Hajela had then told the court that authenticity of only 7.4 per cent of 1, 43,714 refugee registration certificate and 17.4 per cent of 66,559 citizenship certificates could be verified. Besides, 112 RRC and 376 citizenship certificates were found to be forged.
