A fresh tropical cyclone is expected to hit the northeast India states of Assam and Meghalaya in the next 24 hrs.

According to a report by www.skymetweather.com, a Cyclonic Circulation persists over Assam. A north-south trough extends from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to South Bangladesh.

In addition to the cyclonic circulations, moderate rains with one or two moderate spells occurred over Assam, Manipur and Mizoram during the next 24 to 48 hours.

The www.skymetweather.com reported that light to moderate rains were witnessed over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Intermittent rains will continue in Northeast until May 18 next. In this pre-monsoon season, rainfall in Assam is surplus by 6 per cent and in Meghalaya by 7 per cent.

Cyclone Fani – which struck on May 3 last – spared the northeast region from its devastating effects. It battered coastal Odisha (in India) killing at least 64 people. Puri district mainly bore the brunt of the cyclone.

Earlier, the deadly cyclone Mahasen had ravaged Bangladesh in May 2013. Over 15 people perished in the cyclone and more than a million people were displaced due to the resulting rains and landslides.
