Ahead of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, a patrol party of the Assam Rifles intercepted a person at Dimapur in Nagaland on Thursday who was carrying an undisclosed cash amounting to Rs 57 lakh!
The surveillance team of the Investigation Directorate in Dimapur responded immediately on receiving information from the election monitoring authorities in Nagaland about the huge amount.
The cash was recovered from the person at around 9 pm and he was handed over to the Investigation Directorate authorities for interrogation.
This is the biggest seizure of cash in the Northeast region since the election dates were announced. The identity of the person carrying the massive amount of cash is yet to be known.
After the model code of conduct coming into play once the poll dates were announced, the Directorate of Investigation of Income Tax for the northeastern region is keeping a hawk eye on election expenditure.
Several other agencies requisitioned by the Election Commission (EC) are also on high alert vis-à-vis the flow of cash.
