Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling on Friday inaugurated the new academic and administrative block of the first Government Pharmacy College at Sajong Rumtek in East Sikkim.

The total area of the pharmacy college is 1.007 acres, where four-storied administrative and academic block is constructed in an area of 44,491.32 sq ft.

The new administrative and academic block has administrative section, medical room, lecture hall, library, pharmaceutical analysis laboratory, machine rooms, pharmacognosy laboratory, museum, pharmaceutical biotechnology laboratory, conference hall and computer room language lab which will facilitate B-Pharm students of the state.

Besides, five-storied hostel block (boys and girls) will be constructed to accommodate 152 students.

In his address, Sikkim chief minister Chamling expressed his happiness as he inaugurated the first Government Pharmacy College of the state.

“The state government is committed to impart value based quality education along with development of positive empowerment attitude, skills and abilities to meet the emerging challenges of present competitive modern era,” he said.

“The speed and scale made by the state government in education sector set a new paradigm in providing free education from primarily level to higher studies. I believe in power of knowledge and education as we live in an artificial intelligence age where there is a need to keep pace with this changing technology,” said Chamling.

The Sikkim CM mentioned that the college will emerge as a centre of excellence for higher education and will be serving the society, state and the nation.

He also stated that the establishment of pharmacy college in this region will create a gamut of opportunities for every individual from education to research as well as the people residing in the region.

The CM urged the students to maintain the sense of respect and dignity of work and labour to meet the inclusive demand in this competitive world.

He also exhorted students to rise above caste, creed and religion and take into count talent and knowledge.

Chief minister Chamling informed that new university will be coming up in Sikkim where artificial intelligence will be taught.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Chamling said, “Sikkim is the first state in the country at the forefront of women empowerment and providing various schemes and opportunities is the key in achieving cent percent women empowerment in the state. In other places women are significantly left behind but in Sikkim, women are relatively advanced because there is no gender discrimination and disparity.”

He announced to provide free laptop to all the students of Government Pharma College and Institute of Hotel Management, Rumtek.

He also announced a grant of Rs 3 lakh each to both the Institutes.
