The mysterious death of Anup Sharma, popularly known as Pimpu, a former active leader of the Assam Movement, presently a resident of Pub Sarania area of Guwahati and born in Mangaldai has created sensation among the people, both in greater Chandmari area as well as at his birth place Mangaldai.

He was 60 years old. It is learnt from his close associates that at around 7 pm on Sunday evening when he was returning home from Chandmari through the railway crossing after some day to day marketing.

Suddenly he came under a running train resulting in his death. Some people termed it as an incident of suicide while others claimed it to be an accident case.

Born to the family of retired senior administrative officer  Annanda Charan Sharma and Munu Debi of Bamunpara, Mangaldai , Anup actively took part in the Assam Movement and faced imprisonment for several times and also suffered inhumane torture by security forces.

After the Assam Movement, he established himself as a prominent businessman and social worker of Chandmari area getting associated with many socio cultural public organizations including Chandmari Durga Puja celebration committee.

However, according to his close circles recently he has been facing some financial crisis due to some losses in the business.

Many former senior leaders of the Assam Movement including Bhargab Kr Das, Hiren Kr Saharia and Lankeswar Baisya while talking to Northeast Now have expressed their shock and grief at the sudden demise of the dynamic former leader of the Assam Movement and a popular leading citizen of the greater Chandmari area .
