Guwahati: A Delhi court on Tuesday issued notice to the city police on an anticipatory bail application filed by Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a sexual harassment case.

Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh sought a response from the Delhi Police and directed that no coercive action be taken against Akoijam until the next hearing, scheduled for November 5. The court also asked the investigating officer (IO) to appear with the case records on that date.

The judge said the anticipatory bail application filed by the Inner Manipur MP would be considered during the next hearing.

The development comes amid a series of legal proceedings involving Akoijam, who was dismissed from his position at JNU in October following allegations of sexual harassment. Akoijam has described his termination as a “witch hunt” and questioned whether due process was followed.

On October 12, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against him, days after the university terminated his services. However, on Monday, the Delhi High Court stayed JNU’s termination order and listed the matter for further hearing in January 2027.

According to reports, at least 11 female students submitted sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May. The complainants alleged that he invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or social gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some also accused him of making obscene and inappropriate remarks during classroom interactions.

The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North Police Station based on a complaint and supporting documents submitted by JNU’s Chief Security Officer (CSO).

According to the FIR, the university’s Internal Committee (IC) examined complaints made by several students and subsequently forwarded its findings and observations to the police.

The CSO’s complaint stated that the committee had conducted an inquiry into the allegations and recorded its assessment after examining witnesses, defence witnesses and other material placed before it.

The FIR states that the allegations against Akoijam, who was associated with the Centre for Studies of Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences, were examined by the Internal Committee after considering the statements of witnesses and other evidence gathered during the inquiry.

The matter is now before the court, with the Delhi Police response to Akoijam’s anticipatory bail plea expected at the next hearing on November 5.
