Imphal: Senior Congress leaders met on Monday to review the security crisisย in Manipur and discuss the partyโ€™s strategy for the 2027 Assembly elections.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi led the meeting in New Delhi.

Senior leaders who attended included Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, Manipur Congress president Okramย Ibobi Singh and Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra.

During the meeting, state leaders raised concerns about the law and order situation, continuing violence and the administrationโ€™s inability to restore normalcy.

The party leadership said its priorities would be peace, security and accountable governance, with the restoration of stability forming a key part of its election agenda.

The meeting took place amid fresh protests in the state. Demonstrators blocked roads and burnt tyres in Kangpokpi district after two mutilated bodies of missing youths were found in Senapati district.

The incident followed separate clashes between Kuki and Naga groups, which have claimed more than 60 lives since February.

The wider ethnic conflict between the valley-based Meitei and hill-based Kuki communities has left at least 306 people dead and 49 missing since May 2023.

Congress leaders also criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over its handling of the situation. They accused the government of failing to address the crisis in the state and said voters had rejected the ruling party in both parliamentary constituencies in the 2024 general elections.

The meeting followed a joint opposition rally at Ramlila Maidan, where delegates from Manipur raised slogans calling for the protection of the state and criticised the central government over alleged governance failures.
