Meghalaya Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday asked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to convene a meeting of the state security commission and discuss the matter related to transfers of police officers across different ranks and files in the state.
In a letter to the chief minister, the leader of the opposition alleged haphazard and irregular transfers of police officers in the last few months.
“This development has vitiated the environment in the whole police organization as most of these transfers have been an outcome of political interference,” Mukul Sangma said.
He said it is imperative to note that the Police Organisation plays a crucial role in the whole process of “administration of justice,” besides the burden of various other responsibilities of attending to call of duty as per mandate of law.
He further said this whole action resorted to by the authorities due to political interference is in contravention of the provisions of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010.
Stating that this is also creating an unhealthy precedence which will have a serious bearing in the whole process of “administration of justice,” Mukul Sangma urged the chief minister to call for a discussion related to the matter in the state security commission at the earliest.
