Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Friday urged the state’s youth to look beyond government jobs and explore entrepreneurship, while saying the government was willing to engage with all stakeholders over the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).
Addressing the silver jubilee celebrations of the All Palin, Chambang, Yangte, Gangte & Tarak-Lengdi Studentsโ Union (APCYGTSU) at Palin, Mein said young people must take advantage of emerging opportunities in tourism, agriculture and other sectors rather than depend solely on government employment.
He pointed to Arunachal Pradesh’s natural beauty, biodiversity and cultural diversity, saying improving road connectivity and tourism infrastructure were opening up opportunities in homestays, resorts, restaurants and other tourism-related businesses. He urged young entrepreneurs to make use of government schemes and incentives.
On the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, Mein said the government was open to dialogue with community organisations, student bodies, civil society groups and individuals who had expressed concerns over the project.
He said differences in a democracy should be addressed through constructive engagement, informed discussions and mutual understanding. He also stressed the need for expert consultations and public awareness on the project.
The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the changing opportunities for Arunachal’s younger generation, saying improved exposure and platforms had enabled them to demonstrate their abilities in sports, culture, agriculture and other fields.
Referring to platforms such as Arunachal Idol, Arunachal’s Got Talent and Miss Arunachal, he said young people today had greater opportunities to develop and display their talents. He also appreciated the growing confidence and communication skills of participants in Miss APCYGTSU 2026.
Mein stressed the need to preserve indigenous languages, traditions and cultural identity while embracing modernisation. He urged young people to document oral histories, preserve traditional knowledge and safeguard their languages and literature for future generations. He also called for the preservation and digitisation of ancient manuscripts.
Highlighting the state’s development potential, he referred to its hydropower, mineral and mining resources and called for their responsible utilisation to support economic growth and create opportunities for local people.
Mein urged the youth to channel their energy and abilities towards building a peaceful and progressive Arunachal Pradesh.
He congratulated APCYGTSU on completing 25 years and appreciated the Silver Jubilee Celebration Committee and the student body for bringing together students and communities to celebrate their shared heritage and cultural identity.
The celebrations, held under the theme โHonouring the Past, Charting the Future,โ were attended by Ministers Balo Raja and Ojing Tasing, among others.
The programme featured cultural performances and the grand finale of Miss APCYGTSU 2026.
