Aizawl: Mizoram State University (MzSU), initially proposed for Aizawl but later relocated to Lunglei, is expected to become operational around 2028, state Higher and Technical Education Minister Vanlalthlana said on Wednesday.
The Mizoram State University Bill was first passed by the state Assembly on March 4, 2025, with Aizawl designated as the university’s location. However, the government later decided to shift the institution to Lunglei for administrative convenience and other considerations. The Bill was subsequently passed again during the Assembly session in February this year, the minister said.
Vanlalthlana said the state government had begun the process of appointing a Vice-Chancellor and a Registrar for the university. However, after one of the nominees withdrew, the government constituted a fresh Search Committee. The selection process for the two key positions is now underway.
The government has created 71 posts for the university and has so far secured approval to fill 21 of them. While some appointments have already been completed, recruitment for the remaining approved positions is in progress.
The state government is also identifying a suitable rented building in Lunglei to accommodate the university’s initial operations. Work to make the institution functional will be expedited once the building is finalised.
The minister expressed hope that MzSU would become fully operational around 2028.
Mizoram Engineering College set to begin courses in 2027-28
Alongside the university project, the state government is working to expand technical education infrastructure.
Mizoram Engineering College at Pukpui in Lunglei district, built at a cost of around Rs 26 crore, has received approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to offer Civil Engineering and Computer Science Engineering courses.
Each course will have an annual intake of 30 students. According to Vanlalthlana, the college is expected to begin academic activities in the 2027-28 session.
The government has also secured funding related to forest clearance for the development of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Mizoram campus at Lengpui.
Additionally, the state has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Centre under the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) project to strengthen technical education.
Under the initiative, Rs 6 crore has been earmarked for Women’s Polytechnic Aizawl, while Rs 18 crore has been allocated for NIT Mizoram.
The department has also partnered with BharatCares, an IBM SkillsBuild partner, to provide industry-relevant digital skills training to students and job seekers.
Promotions and coaching support for students
In the general education sector, the government has completed the promotions of 136 college teachers between 2024 and 2026, the minister said.
The monthly remuneration of Casual Assistant Professors was also increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 in 2025.
Meanwhile, a Departmental Promotion Committee meeting was held at the Mizoram Public Service Commission on October 23 to consider the regularisation of 22 Assistant Professors working on a contractual basis.
The Higher and Technical Education Department has also entered into an agreement with Chennai-based Shankar IAS Academy to provide free coaching for the civil services examination.
Vanlalthlana said 15 Mizo students are currently receiving intensive coaching under the initiative. The students are also being provided with study materials free of cost.
The measures form part of the state government’s broader efforts to expand higher education, strengthen technical training and improve academic and career opportunities for students in Mizoram.
