Imphal: Dr. Thangkhankhup Guite, 33, son of Zomi Reunification Organisation (ZRO) president Thanglianpau Guite, on Wednesday announced his intention to contest the 2027 Manipur Assembly elections from the 56-Thanlon constituency in Churachandpur district.
The current term of the Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on March 13, 2027, with the next election expected to be held before its expiry.
Guite made the announcement at his father’s residence in Dorcas Veng, New Lamka, where he sought public support, guidance and prayers, saying his priorities would include peace and development in the constituency.
An MBBS graduate from the Saraswati Institute of Medical Sciences in Uttar Pradesh, Guite currently serves as the village chief of Aibulon. He said his medical background would help him improve healthcare access, particularly in remote areas of the constituency.
He identified healthcare, road connectivity, communication, education, drinking water, economic development and equitable growth as his key priorities if elected.
Guite also clarified that he had not yet decided which political party he would join to contest the election.
Addressing the media, he said he would work towards ensuring equal treatment for all tribes and balanced development across the region. He added that honesty and avoiding false promises, principles he associated with his father, would guide his approach to public service.
The ZRO is the political wing and parent organisation of the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA), an underground outfit that is currently under a Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the government through the United People’s Front (UPF) conglomerate.
