Imphal: The social organisation Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA), Kangleipak, has demanded the immediate resignation of BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi, accusing her of failing to protect the stateโs indigenous population while allowing seven Kuki BJP legislators who have sought a separate administration to remain in the party.
The BJP is the principal partner in the government led by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
In a press release, WAMA questioned why no disciplinary action had been taken against the seven legislators, including their expulsion from the party. The organisation alleged that the state BJP leadership had placed political interests above the safety and security of Manipurโs indigenous communities.
The outfit further accused Sharda Devi of failing to demonstrate firm leadership or take action against the legislators, despite the continuing loss of civilian lives since the outbreak of violence in May 2023. It questioned her moral authority to continue as state party president while, according to the organisation, failing to address these concerns.
Referring to the prevailing security situation, WAMA cited the alleged killing and mutilation of Naga civilians by Kuki militants, along with the deaths of three Meitei men from the Khundrakpam constituency. The organisation said the incidents underscored the urgency of protecting civilians and holding those responsible accountable.
WAMA maintained that Sharda Devi should resign if she was unable to ensure accountability within the party or take action against legislators advocating a separate administration. It also argued that if restrictions arising from her holding multiple positions were affecting her responsibilities, she should relinquish the state party presidency without delay.
The organisation also pointed to growing public anger over the issue, stating that women had staged protests and burned effigies of the BJP state president at several locations.
Reiterating its demand, WAMA said political considerations should not take precedence over public safety. It called for urgent steps to prevent further civilian casualties and restore lasting peace in Manipur.
