Guwahati: Two men from Nagpur who were allegedly held captive in Assamโs Chirang district have been rescued following a joint operation by Nagpur and local police, officials said.
Police have arrested one suspect in connection with a Rs 15-lakh ransom demand, while the main accused remains at large.
The victims were identified as Hasnain Bilal Asrar Ahmed and his friend Roshan, alias Zubair Rajesh Bundel.
According to a complaint lodged in Nagpur by Hasnainโs sister, Iqra Tabassum, the duo had travelled to Guwahati on October 11.
Three days later, the prime suspect, identified as Rocky, allegedly contacted the family via video call, showing the two men in captivity. He demanded Rs 15 lakh for their release and threatened to burn them alive if the money was not paid, the complaint stated.
Following the complaint, Tehsil police in Nagpur registered a case and arrested 28-year-old Nitin Wanjari, a resident of Lashkaribagh. During interrogation, Wanjari allegedly admitted to conspiring with Rocky in the kidnapping plot.
A Nagpur police team later travelled to Chirang and rescued the men with help from Assam Police. They were taken back to Nagpur and reunited with their families.
Police are continuing their investigation and efforts to trace Rocky.
