Imphal: The Manipur Naga Youth Organisation (MNYO) on Sunday accused the 11 Assam Rifles of firing mortars and heavy gunfire at Naga volunteers in Kamjong district.

The organisation alleged that the unit, stationed near Chassad village along the border, attacked the volunteers to protect local residents who were reportedly sheltering Myanmar-based Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) militants.

The shelling reportedly injured three civilians and destroyed two houses. The MNYO said the incident triggered panic in Kamjong and nearby areas.

According to the organisation, the confrontation began after Naga volunteers intercepted several KNA-B militants.

The militants were allegedly accompanied by the Chassad village chief and were seen near the Kamjong police station, where they reportedly taunted local residents.

The MNYO cited a viral video showing a slain militant wearing a KNA-B chest insignia as evidence of the presence of foreign insurgents in the region. The incident occurred alongside a separate gun battle at N Teikhang along the IT Road.

The MNYO criticised the Assam Rifles over the alleged shelling and compared the incident with what it described as the force’s inaction during insurgent attacks on several Naga villages earlier this year.

The organisation called on higher authorities to order an immediate and impartial inquiry into the conduct of the security forces.

The organisation also demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen. It alleged that while Kipgen condemned attacks on Kuki areas, Naga villages in her constituency continued to face attacks by the KNF-P, a militant group allegedly led by her husband.

The MNYO further accused the state government of ignoring the alleged involvement of Kuki police personnel in kidnappings, killings and insurgent activities in the area.
