Guwahati: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) will approach the Supreme Court against the bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg in connection with Assamese singer Zubeen Gargโ€™s death, SIT chief Munna Prasad Gupta said at a press conference.

The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Mahanta on October 9 and to Sandipan on October 16. Both are among the seven accused in the case related to the singerโ€™s death in Singapore.

Mahanta, arrested by the SIT on October 2 last year, is lodged in Haflong Jail. She is the first of the seven accused in the main case to secure bail.

The court granted her bail on a bond of Rs 50,000 with two sureties for the same amount.

Sandipan, a suspended Assam Police officer and the singerโ€™s cousin, has been in Baksa jail since October 2025. He faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

He accompanied Zubeen on his Singapore trip in September 2025 and joined the yacht excursion during which the singer died at sea. His release is expected after completion of the required legal formalities.

Gupta said the government had taken legal advice and decided to challenge the bail orders.

โ€œWe have taken legal opinion on this, and we have decided to move Supreme Court against bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg,โ€ he said.

He said getting bail did not amount to acquittal and that the trial against the two accused was continuing on a day-to-day basis before a fast-track court.

The court has completed the examination of 136 eyewitnesses, Gupta said, adding that their statements had been recorded and were with the court.
