Guwahati: The Gauhati Press Club has condemned the alleged assault and harassment of journalists by police while they were covering protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi, and has called for a protest rally in Guwahati on Saturday, October 17.
The rally will be held at the Gauhati Press Club premises at 10 am to demand the safety of journalists, protection of media freedom and respect for the professional rights of media personnel.
In a statement, the press club expressed concern over visuals purportedly showing journalists being targeted despite displaying their press identity cards. It also raised allegations that digital media journalists were specifically targeted and harassed while covering the protest.
Condemning the alleged obstruction and mistreatment of journalists performing their professional duties, the organisation urged media professionals to unite in support of press freedom and journalistsโ safety.
The Gauhati Press Club has called on journalists and other media personnel to participate in the rally to register their protest against the alleged incident in the national capital.
