Imphal: Security forces in Manipur have seized 3.5 kg of suspected brown sugar and arrested three alleged insurgent cadres during a series of coordinated operations across multiple districts on Saturday.
The operations targeted suspected drug trafficking and extortion networks, with separate arrests reported in Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching and Imphal West districts.
Suspected brown sugar seized along Tiddim Road
In Bishnupur district, a joint team comprising the Bishnupur Commando unit and personnel from Moirang Police Station intercepted a suspected drug consignment during a frisking and checking operation at Okshobung along Tiddim Road.
The team arrested Md. Abir Khan, 46, a resident of Oinam Sawombung Makha Leikai who was reportedly residing in Tuibong.
Security personnel seized approximately 3.5 kg of suspected brown sugar from his possession. They also confiscated a Hero Destini 125 scooter allegedly used to transport the contraband.
Two PREPAK (Pro) cadres arrested over alleged extortion
In a separate operation in Thoubal district, the Thoubal Commando unit arrested Elangbam Dinesh Singh, 38, an alleged active cadre of the proscribed outfit PREPAK (Pro).
According to the information provided, the operation was launched following intelligence inputs about extortion activities in the Thoubal area.
Subsequent questioning reportedly led security personnel to another alleged operative, Potshangbam Bijen Singh, 33, who was arrested at Kakching Lamkhai.
The two men are suspected of involvement in extortion activities and the transportation of illegal arms. A case has been registered at Thoubal Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
RPF/PLA cadre arrested in Imphal West
Meanwhile, Manipur Police, in coordination with central security forces, conducted a separate operation in the Lamboikhongnangkhong area of Imphal West district following intelligence inputs about suspected insurgent activity.
The operation resulted in the arrest of Wangkhem Malemnganba, 37, an alleged active cadre of the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) and its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Officials said the suspect was allegedly involved in extortion targeting local businesses and residents in Imphal West.
A case has been registered at Lamphel Police Station for further investigation.
The three operations form part of the security forces’ efforts to tackle suspected narcotics trafficking, insurgent activities and extortion networks in Manipur.
