Guwahati: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been preventively arrested under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the party’s legal head Ratna Singh said.

The three were detained aboard a flight after it landed at Delhi airport on Saturday. Singh said they would be presented before an executive magistrate in Delhi Cantonment on Sunday.

The BNSS generally allows detention for up to 24 hours before a person is produced before a magistrate, unless special laws apply.

Their whereabouts remain unknown. Delhi Police had not responded to queries about their location. The CJP wrote to the Delhi Police commissioner on Saturday evening seeking details and calling the arrests “illegal”.

CJP member Ajinkya Shinde said the party would stage another march to Jantar Mantar on Sunday and continue its agitation until Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar resigned.

Around 41,000 security personnel were deployed across Delhi on Saturday to prevent a planned protest demanding Kumar’s resignation. Police detained about 7,000 people, leaving large parts of the capital deserted.

Four former chief ministers, Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, were among those detained, along with students, lawyers and politicians.

Small groups of protesters gathered at several locations during the day but were dispersed by police.

Meanwhile, the CJP plans to protest again on Sunday as the Supreme Court takes up petitions challenging the police crackdown.

The court will also hear a contempt plea alleging breach of its Friday order against blanket restrictions on metro and railway services, along with a challenge to the preventive detention of Opposition leaders, including four former chief ministers.

Fresh protests are scheduled to begin on Monday, according to the Opposition, whose demonstration last week disrupted movement across central Delhi.

Spike strips, yellow barricades and recorded warnings over loudspeakers were part of the security arrangements, with barricades used to restrict traffic on major roads.

Police also detained people on their way to the rally from 1 am on Saturday. The authorities had not granted permission for the event.
