Guwahati: The grandmother of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke died on Saturday at Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, amid uncertainty over whether he would be allowed to travel home to attend her last rites.

She had been suffering from a prolonged illness and age-related ailments for the past few days. She was the mother of Dipke’s father, Bhagwan Dipke.

Dipke was in Delhi when he received news of his grandmother’s death. He had left Mumbai on Saturday morning to participate in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar but was detained by Delhi Police at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).

Following the news of the death, questions arose over whether the police would permit Dipke to travel to Hingoli or Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to be with his family during the bereavement. Details regarding his release and travel arrangements were not immediately available.

Meanwhile, Dipke’s parents, Anita and Bhagwan Dipke, were in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where police personnel had been deployed outside their residence. They were expected to leave for Hingoli to attend the last rites following the news of the death.

Earlier on Saturday, Delhi Police detained Dipke and fellow CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka at the airport ahead of the party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar.

Police personnel reportedly entered the aircraft carrying Dipke after it landed at IGI Airport. Dipke later shared a video on social media showing police officers entering the flight as he and the two other party members were detained.

In the video, Dipke could be heard telling the police, “…I have come here to be arrested; arrest me.”

The CJP also announced the detentions through a post on its social media account, stating: “Abhijeet Dipke DETAINED! Saurav Das DETAINED! Ashutosh Ranka DETAINED!”

The detentions took place ahead of the CJP’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The party had called for the protest as part of its campaign demanding accountability over the electoral roll revision process.
