Imphal: The BJP has demanded the immediate resignation of Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed him over sexual harassment allegations.
Speaking to reporters in Imphal on Friday, October 9, BJP Manipur Pradesh president and Rajya Sabha MP A. Sharda Devi said the party had received evidence from JNU regarding allegations of misconduct involving young female students.
Devi said Akoijam’s alleged actions were disrespectful to women and unacceptable for a public representative. She called on him to resign from Parliament immediately.
She also said women’s dignity and safety should not be used for political purposes. She called for consistent standards and accountability from political leaders who speak about women’s rights.
The BJP’s demand followed an order issued by JNU vice-chancellor Santishree D. Pandit on the same day.
The order dismissed Akoijam from his post as an associate professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems with immediate effect.
The university took the action under Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services Rules after an investigation by its Internal Committee. The disciplinary action followed complaints from 11 female students.
They accused Akoijam of inviting them to his campus residence, making inappropriate sexual advances and making lewd remarks during classes.
Akoijam, a filmmaker and Congress MP, was elected from the Inner Manipur constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
