Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court on Friday granted bail to Amritprabha Mahanta, one of the seven accused in connection with Assamese singer Zubeen Gargโs death.
The court reserved its order after concluding the hearing on Mahantaโs bail plea on Wednesday, following several days of arguments.
Mahanta was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on October 2 last year and is currently lodged in Haflong Jail.
She is the first accused in the main investigation into Gargโs death to secure bail. Earlier, two personal security officers (PSOs) attached to the singer had obtained bail in a separate case concerning alleged financial transactions.
The bail was granted against a bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties for the same amount.
Speaking to reporters outside the court, the public prosecutor said the prosecution was awaiting the detailed order to understand the grounds for the decision.
โWe are yet to receive the reasons behind the courtโs decision. We expect to get the detailed order shortly,โ the prosecutor said.
Mahanta will not be released immediately. Her bail bond must first be submitted to and accepted by the trial court.
The prosecutor said the state government would decide whether to challenge the order.
โAs the public prosecutor, I cannot challenge the order directly. I will write to the government, after which the government and police department will decide on the next course of action,โ he added.
