Imphal: Manipur Police have re-arrested an alleged militant who had escaped from police custody in August, leading to the arrest of another suspected operative allegedly involved in cadre recruitment, officials said.
The first accused, 30-year-old Buyamayum Ayub Khan, a resident of Hiyangthang Tarahei Konjil and son of Md. Abdul Jalil, was apprehended during a targeted operation, according to police.
Khan was initially arrested on August 23, 2026, in the Lilong Tairen Makhong area. Police identified him as an alleged extortionist associated with the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (Peopleโs War Group), or KCP (PWG).
While in custody at Lilong Police Station, Khan allegedly escaped on August 26 by scaling the wall of the police complex. Police subsequently launched a search operation to trace him.
After several weeks, a team from Lilong Police Station located and re-arrested Khan on October 4 at Yairipok Leikai Mana Ingkhol in the Hatta area of Imphal East district.
Police said his subsequent interrogation provided information about the alleged local network of the banned outfit. Acting on the information, security personnel conducted a follow-up operation at Wangjing Bazar the next day.
The operation led to the arrest of 28-year-old Thongram Keli Meitei, also known as Khuman, police said.
Meitei, son of late Th. Kumar Meitei, is from Tentha Khongbal and was residing temporarily at Tentha Marongband in Thoubal district. Police allege that he was associated with the KCP (PWG) and was involved in recruiting and allegedly radicalising new cadres for the outfit.
Both accused remain in custody as police continue their investigation into the alleged activities and wider network of the proscribed organisation.
