Imphal: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to visit Manipur this month, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said on Tuesday, although the date and itinerary have not yet been finalised.

Speaking to reporters at the Chief Ministerโ€™s Secretariat in Mantripukhri after a Cabinet meeting, Singh said Shahโ€™s visit is expected in October but that specific details are yet to be decided.

Shah had earlier been scheduled to visit Senapati on October 7 to lay the foundation stone for a new medical college. However, reports on Tuesday said the final schedule for the proposed visit is still being worked out.

The press briefing was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, government spokesperson Sapam Ranjan Singh and Thokchom Radheshyam. It was convened primarily to convey the Cabinetโ€™s gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the completion of 25 years of his public service and to outline government development initiatives.

Shahโ€™s proposed visit comes amid continuing security concerns in Manipur, including fresh violence involving Naga and Kuki communities in several hill districts. Recent clashes have resulted in deaths and displacement in parts of the state.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has also not yet extended the tripartite Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups. The one-year pact, signed on September 4, 2025, expired on September 4, 2026. The Centre has confirmed that it has not been extended.

The proposed visit also comes amid demands from civil society groups for an updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) using 1951 as the base year, with organisations seeking completion of the exercise before the Census. The Centre had earlier deferred the house-listing phase of Census 2027 in Manipur following demands for an NRC to be conducted first.
