Imphal: Members of Hockey Manipur and local supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport on Monday to welcome Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Bichu Devi Kharibam after India’s historic women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games 2026.
The victory marked India’s first women’s hockey gold at the continental event in 44 years.
Sushila credited the achievement to the collective support of her family, coaches and fans across the country. She also called for improved sports infrastructure in Manipur, saying facilities remain limited outside Khuman Lampak Main Stadium and the SAI Sports Complex.
She said additional hockey centres could help encourage greater participation among young players. Reflecting on her own career, which continued despite three major injuries, Sushila urged young athletes to remain committed to their goals.
Goalkeeper Bichu Devi attributed the team’s success to six months of intensive training. She described the victory over China and India’s qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as major milestones for Indian hockey.
