Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh held a security meeting with senior Assam Rifles officials at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri on Thursday. The meeting reviewed the stateโ€™s security situation and the progress of fencing along the India-Myanmar border.

The Chief Minister shared details of the meeting on his official social media channel. Major General Gaurav Sharma, SC, SM, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), and Brigadier Pranav Prasoon, DIG of 28 Sector Assam Rifles, met the Chief Minister. They discussed regional security and the ongoing construction of the border fence.

The meeting comes as Manipurโ€™s border districts, including Kamjong, Chandel and Tengnoupal, continue to face security challenges. These include the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, ethnic tensions in Northeast India and the activities of insurgent groups.

Assam Rifles personnel have maintained round-the-clock surveillance in the area and are establishing additional forward operating locations.

Security forces also face challenges related to the smuggling of illegal firearms, narcotics trafficking and the movement of refugees across the border. Authorities have been working to expand physical barriers and electronic surveillance systems along the frontier.

India is fencing its 1,643-kilometre border with Myanmar as part of efforts to address drug trafficking, illegal immigration and insurgent movement.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had also announced plans to end the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and replace it with a regulated biometric and QR-coded border-pass system.

Manipur shares around 398 kilometres of the international border with Myanmar. Approximately 55 kilometres had been fenced as of September 2026.

Challenging terrain and difficulties in transporting materials have caused delays, while the state government has set a target to complete the fencing by 2028.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is carrying out fencing work in sensitive areas, including Moreh.

Pilot projects involving Hybrid Surveillance Systems (HSS) and virtual fencing technology are also being conducted along selected stretches.
