Aizawl: Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk met Mizo National Front (MNF) president and former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga in New Delhi on Monday to discuss Mizoram’s peace settlement and the experience of the Mizo peace process, according to an MNF release.
Wangchuk met Zoramthanga at Mizoram House, where the two held discussions for more than one-and-a-half hours on politics, contemporary issues and the reconciliation between Mizoram and the Government of India.
“I want to study the successful Memorandum of Settlement of Mizoram and understand more about the experiences of Zoramthanga, who played a key role in the Mizo Peace Accord,” Wangchuk was quoted as saying in the release.
Zoramthanga told Wangchuk that the Mizo Peace Accord is regarded as a durable and successful peace settlement and has attracted interest from individuals and organisations seeking to study conflict resolution.
He also spoke about the Centre’s role in facilitating the peace process and the steps taken to bring different stakeholders into the settlement. Zoramthanga expressed hope that Mizoram’s experience of peace would continue and serve as an example of reconciliation.
Wangchuk praised Zoramthanga for his political career, including his years in the Mizo national movement, his tenure as chief minister and his 36 years as MNF president.
Wangchuk reiterated his intention to visit Mizoram to study the Memorandum of Settlement and invited Zoramthanga to visit Ladakh.
