Imphal: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), the common political platform of the Kuki-Zo community, has set October 10 as the deadline for the government to address the issue of community members’ bodies lying in the morgue of Churachandpur District Hospital. The council has warned of intensified protests if the matter remains unresolved.
The decision was taken during a six-hour leadership consultation held at the Kangpokpi district headquarters on Tuesday. The meeting also saw the KZC reiterate its demand for a Union Territory with a legislature.
The consultation was organised by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) under the theme “Unity, Consultation, Progress” and brought together political leaders, civil society representatives, religious leaders and academics. Discussions focused on bridging differences among various community groups and chalking out a coordinated course of future political action.
KZC chairman Henlenthang said the meeting was part of a series of regional consultations aimed at addressing political differences within the community and building greater coordination among its leadership.
During the conclave, leaders reaffirmed their demand for territorial autonomy and maintained that the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF) would continue as the designated representatives for political dialogue with the government.
The council’s latest decision comes amid continuing efforts by Kuki-Zo community organisations to press the government on political and humanitarian issues arising from the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
