Imphal: The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights after the Manipur government informed it that the blockade on National Highway 2 (NH-2) had been cleared and the movement of essential goods had resumed.
The petition, filed under Article 32 of the Constitution, had sought the removal of prolonged economic blockades in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, which the petitioners said were disrupting the supply of essential commodities, including food, fuel and medicines, to Kuki-Zo-inhabited hill areas.
A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana heard the matter.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the Bench that NH-2 was fully operational and that commercial vehicles carrying essential goods had resumed movement.
Senior Advocate Anand Grover, appearing for the Kuki Women Organisation, referred to a Manipur government order dated August 28, 2026, directing the immediate removal of all highway obstructions. He said the petitioners’ grievances stood addressed provided the state government fully implemented the directive.
The Supreme Court noted that the highway had been reopened and that the state administration had submitted a compliance status report. It consequently held that the petition had become infructuous and closed the proceedings.
The Bench also noted that administrative measures to clear remaining blockades on other regional routes were underway.
