Imphal: Police arrested two persons, including a minor, and seized a large quantity of codeine-based cough syrup during an operation at Kwakta Terakhongshangbi in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, officials said on Tuesday.
According to police, personnel intercepted an Activa scooter on Monday and recovered 130 bottles of Vincof-Plus cough syrup containing 26 grams of Codeine Phosphate.
The scooter was allegedly being driven by 33-year-old Mouluvi Imran, who was accompanied by a minor on the pillion. Both were detained and taken to Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station, along with the seized medicines, for further investigation.
Police said the duo could not produce valid permits or documents authorising the possession, storage or commercial distribution of the prescription medicines.
The main accused has subsequently been booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Investigators said the seizure was part of efforts to curb the illicit movement of pharmaceutical drugs in the region. Police are also examining the wider supply network to identify the source of the seized medicines and trace other individuals allegedly involved in their distribution.
