Guwahati: Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam attracted 35,371 visitors during 2025-26, state minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said on World Tourism Day on Sunday (September 27).
In a post on X, Mallabaruah described Pobitora as an emerging destination for nature tourism and emphasised the need to align tourism development with wildlife conservation and livelihood opportunities for communities living around forest areas.
The minister said the government was working to involve forest-fringe communities more closely in conservation efforts while creating employment opportunities in areas such as nature guiding and interpretation.
He added that tourism initiatives were also being designed to offer visitors a broader understanding of Pobitora’s landscape and ecology, rather than focusing solely on wildlife sightings.
“Tourism must strengthen conservation, and conservation must create opportunities for our people,” Mallabaruah said.
Located in Morigaon district, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros and remains one of Assam’s key wildlife and nature-tourism destinations.
