Pathsala: The Assam government is set to recruit 130 veterinary doctors and 200 livestock field assistants under the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, Bajali Guardian Minister Nilima Devi said on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters after a review meeting at the Bajali Deputy Commissioner’s office, Devi said the government was undertaking several initiatives to strengthen the livestock sector and increase milk production across the state.
The minister emphasised the need to shift from traditional cattle-rearing methods towards scientific and commercially oriented livestock farming. She urged cattle farmers to adopt farm-based rearing practices and assured them of government support.
Devi also announced the introduction of a livestock insurance system aimed at providing financial protection to farmers and safeguarding their domestic animals against potential losses.
Veterinary hospitals across Assam that are currently in poor condition will also be upgraded, she said, adding that improvement works are expected to begin soon.
Highlighting the fisheries sector, Devi said beneficiary lists have already been prepared for the distribution of fish fingerlings and fish feed to eligible fish farmers.
According to the minister, the government is focusing on both livestock and fisheries to strengthen the rural economy and generate self-employment opportunities, particularly for unemployed youth.
Earlier, Devi attended a review meeting on the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan at the Bajali Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Following the meeting, she flagged off a pilgrimage journey for devotees from Bajali to the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat.
Bajali MLA Dharmeswar Roy and Deputy Commissioner Madhumita Bhagaboty were also present at the programme.
