Aizawl: Mizoram’s influential student body, the Mizoram Zirlai Pawl (MZP), has called for greater protection of state boundaries, stricter enforcement of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system and safeguards for provisions governing marriage and inheritance of property, a leader said on Friday.
During its general assembly held in Darlawn in Aizawl district on Thursday, the organisation adopted a set of resolutions urging the state government to take steps to protect the state’s genuine boundaries, according to MZP general secretary Lalhmingsanga Chhangte.
He said that the assembly called for the strict implementation of the Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Act, 2026, and urged steps to prevent what the organisation described as descendants of non-Mizo communities from claiming Scheduled Tribe benefits.
The amendment passed by the state Assembly in February seeks to ban polygamy or bigamy, remove the Mizo identity of women marrying non-Mizos and enhance women’s property rights when separated from their husbands.
Chhangte said that the MZP also called for ILP checks at all entry points into Mizoram, and the assembly resolved to pursue measures to ensure that every person entering the state is subject to the required verification.
The ILP system regulates the entry of people from outside the state.
According to official figures presented in the state Assembly last month, nearly 5 lakh Inner Line Permits (ILPs) have been issued since 2024, with more than 2.15 lakh permits issued after the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line in September last year.
The MZP further resolved that the government should formulate stringent laws against businesses operated by non-Mizos or outsiders using Mizo names as a front, and conduct necessary investigations to identify such practices, Chhangte said.
Another important resolution adopted at the assembly was a call for a study into the possible impact of the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) on Mizoram and its people.
It was resolved that the MZP should undertake a study on the project’s possible implications for Mizoram and its people and take appropriate action based on the findings, Chhangte said.
He also said several resolutions that dealt mainly with education, including college transport facilities, additional examination centres for CUET, NEET and other all-India competitive examinations, inclusion of the history of different Mizo groups in school textbooks, career and nationalism campaigns, proper use of the Mizo language in textbooks and intensified drug-awareness programmes, were also adopted during the assembly.
Meanwhile, Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha member Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, who attended the event on Friday, said education was important, adding that Mizo students should explore opportunities outside Mizoram and mentioned the presence and contributions of people from the state in various parts of the country.
Speaking at the Assembly, MZP-GHQ president C. Lalremruata said the 11 resolutions had been passed on Thursday and that the organisation would work vigorously for their implementation.
Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, the chief guest, meanwhile said education was important and that Mizo students should explore opportunities outside Mizoram, and mentioned the presence and contributions of people from the state in various parts of the country.
The MP claimed that the present Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) was implementing various measures for the welfare of students.
