Aizawl: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Special Rapporteur Sayeed Ahmed Baba on Tuesday stressed the need for greater public awareness of human rights and adequate counselling and de-addiction facilities for people affected by substance abuse, particularly youngsters.
Addressing a meeting with heads of government departments in Saitual district, Baba said the NHRC was established to protect and promote the human rights of every individual, according to official sources.
He also emphasised the responsibility of government officials, whose work directly affects people’s lives and well-being, to ensure that their rights are respected and protected.
Baba said visits by NHRC representatives to different places were intended to understand local conditions and learn about good initiatives and practices being implemented in various areas. He also appreciated the initiatives observed during his visit to Saitual.
The meeting was chaired by Saitual District Commissioner Srinivas Sadi and attended by officials from various line departments and representatives of the Sub-Hqrs YMA.
Sadi made a PowerPoint presentation on various aspects of the district and assured that the suggestions made by the NHRC Special Rapporteur would be followed up and acted upon to the extent possible.
During his two-day visit, Baba visited PM Shri School, Primary School-II, Anganwadi Centre-I, Eklavya Model Residential School at Ngopa and a ginger processing unit at Hliappui on Monday.
On Tuesday, he visited the One Stop Centre, police station and district hospital in Saitual before proceeding to Champhai, the sources said.
