Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced on Monday that the 134-year-old Manipur Central Jail will undergo structural reconstruction and modernisation to address its poor condition.
The announcement came after the Chief Minister reviewed the condition of the Imphal-based facility. He also said the shortage of jail personnel would be addressed through an upcoming recruitment process.
The announcement coincided with the first Raising Day of the Prisons and Correctional Services Department. The event was held at Manipur Central Prison in Imphal to mark 134 years of service since the prison was established in 1892.
Chief Minister Singh attended the event as the chief guest along with Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam. He later posted about the event on social media and spoke about the department’s work in correctional administration, custodial care and rehabilitation.
Singh also said he had held discussions with senior police officials on speeding up the recruitment of jail staff. The recruitment will also include appointments under the state’s die-in-harness scheme to support affected families.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam also praised the officers and personnel of the department for their work. He spoke about their efforts to maintain security and discipline and support reformation across Manipur’s correctional system.
The Raising Day celebrations marked the department’s 134 years of service. Manipur Police also holds public marathons in Imphal every October to mark its Raising Day. These include the 16-km and 5-km “Run for Health, Run for Peace” events.
