Guwahati: A woman undergoing in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at a private fertility centre in Guwahati died after her health reportedly deteriorated, with her family alleging delayed medical attention and negligence at the facility.
The deceased has been identified as Liza Phukan Koch, a resident of Rahmaria in Chabua. According to her family, she had been receiving IVF-related treatment at Indira IVF Centre in Lachit Nagar since May under the supervision of Dr Dibyajyoti Goswami.
The family alleged that Liza developed vomiting and diarrhoea after taking a tablet prescribed by the doctor on the night of September 19. Her condition reportedly worsened over the following hours.
According to her relatives, the nurse on duty at the centre failed to provide adequate medical attention despite her deteriorating condition. They subsequently took Liza to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) the following morning, where doctors declared her dead.
The family has also raised questions over the treatment process and payments associated with the IVF procedure. They claimed they had initially paid Rs 3 lakh for the treatment and were later asked to arrange an additional Rs 3 lakh. The relatives said they were prepared to make the further payment and continue with the treatment.
However, they alleged that Liza’s condition continued to deteriorate and questioned whether the treatment provided and the alleged delay in attending to her may have contributed to her death.
The family has also raised concerns over information they received about Liza’s medical test results. They claimed that they were initially informed around 45 days ago that she had tested positive, but were later told that the result was negative.
Following her death, the family filed a complaint at Panbazar Police Station, requesting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and appropriate action if any person or institution is found responsible.
The family has also called for stronger oversight of private IVF and fertility centres, arguing that the increasing number of such facilities requires adequate monitoring and accountability.
The allegations made by the family have not been independently verified. The circumstances surrounding Liza’s death, including whether any medical negligence or treatment-related lapse occurred, would need to be established through medical and police investigations.
