Imphal: Manipur Police have arrested a man and his stepdaughter, both allegedly associated with the Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) or KCP (PWG), following the recovery of live hand grenades in Imphal East and an investigation into an earlier explosive threat at Shija Hospital in Imphal West.
According to police, a live hand grenade was recovered on Saturday morning from the gate of a resident, Yumkhaibam Firoz Khan, at Khergao Awang Sabal Leikai in Imphal East. The grenade had reportedly been secured to the gate with an iron chain.
A laminated press note bearing the names Jan Mohhemad, Haji Dil Mohahmad and Amar Jan was also found alongside the explosive. Police said no insurgent group had so far claimed responsibility for the threat and that a case had been registered to investigate the incident.
In a separate operation, Imphal East police commandos and personnel of the 33rd Assam Rifles arrested Longjam Romen Singh, 45, from Lamphel Super Market in Imphal West. Police identified him as an alleged active member of KCP (PWG).
Investigators subsequently arrested Singh’s 28-year-old stepdaughter, Baby Sanabam, also known as Babysana, who was also allegedly associated with the outfit.
Police said their investigation indicated that Sanabam had allegedly instructed Singh to plant hand grenades at Shija Hospital in Langol, allegedly offering him Rs 30,000 for the task.
During the operation, security personnel seized three mobile phones and a Mahindra Thar SUV, police said.
The arrests are linked to an earlier security incident at the Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) in Langol on August 31, when a suspected explosive device was spotted near a public toilet on the hospital premises at around 7:30 am.
A bomb disposal team of the Manipur Police reached the spot, secured the area and recovered the live grenade without any casualties or accidental detonation.
