North Lakhimpur: A migrant worker from Assamโs Lakhimpur district died at a hospital in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, days after sustaining injuries in an accident, according to his family.
The deceased was identified as Sarat Das, son of Narayan Das and Jirumai Das of Sensowa village under Narayanpur Police Station. He was reportedly working at a tile-making factory in Tamil Nadu.
Family members said Das met with an accident three days ago and was admitted to a local hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on Thursday after undergoing treatment. The family could not immediately ascertain the name or exact location of the factory where he worked.
Dasโs death came a day after another migrant worker from Assam, from neighbouring Majuli district, died while travelling home by train.
Diganta Dutta, 33, a father of one who worked as a private security guard in Hyderabad, died on September 16 while travelling home. Dutta, who was reportedly unwell, died inside the train at Malda station in West Bengal.
The two deaths come amid recurring reports of accidents, deaths and disappearances involving migrant workers from Assam, particularly those travelling between the state and southern parts of the country.
Limited livelihood opportunities at home, along with displacement and loss of livelihoods caused by recurring floods and riverbank erosion, have driven thousands of workers from Assam to industrial centres in southern India in search of employment.
