Guwahati: UK Deputy High Commissioner to East and Northeast India Dr Andrew Fleming has arrived in Assam for his 10th visit to the state, calling it an “anniversary visit” and highlighting the participation of British infrastructure companies during his stay.
Fleming said the visit was significant as several major UK infrastructure firms are currently in Assam as part of engagements in the state.
During his visit, Fleming also shared his impressions of the newly opened terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. Describing the terminal’s architecture on X, he wrote, “Singapore vibes with an Assamese touch,” while referring to its blend of modern design and Assamese elements.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Fleming and expressed hope that his visit would help deepen economic and institutional ties between Assam and the United Kingdom.
“Welcome to Assam, H.E Fleming,” Sarma posted, saying the visit could open “a new chapter in closer UK-Assam ties”. He also placed the engagement within the broader India-UK partnership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Responding to Fleming’s remarks about the greenery inside the airport, Sarma said the plants were natural and intentionally incorporated into the terminal’s design.
“All these plants in the Airport are natural, complementing the bamboos used in the Airport design,” the chief minister said.
The new Guwahati airport terminal incorporates architectural elements inspired by Assam’s cultural heritage and natural environment. Bamboo and other locally inspired design features have been used to give the facility a distinct regional character.
Fleming’s latest visit comes amid efforts by India and the UK to expand cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, trade and investment. Assam has also been seeking to attract international companies and develop stronger business partnerships with overseas investors.
