Guwahati: Former Assam minister and Congress leader Siddique Ahmed died at his residence in Baraigram, Karimganj district, at the age of 64 following a prolonged battle with cancer.
Ahmed had been undergoing treatment for cancer for an extended period before he passed away at his residence.
Born on October 1, 1962, Ahmed represented the Karimganj South Assembly constituency for several terms. He made his electoral debut in 2001 as a Samata Party candidate and won the seat. He contested as an Independent in 2006 before joining the Congress and securing victories from the constituency in 2011 and 2021.
Ahmed served as a minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government. In 2011, he was appointed Minister of State with independent charge of Co-operation and Border Areas Development. He was later elevated to Cabinet rank in 2015 and handled portfolios including Industries and Commerce, Power, and Public Enterprises.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly election, Ahmed won the Karimganj South seat for the fourth time, defeating AGP candidate Aziz Ahmed Khan.
His death brings to an end a political career spanning more than two decades, during which he served as an MLA and held key ministerial responsibilities in the Assam government.
