Guwahati: A cleanliness drive in Shillong on Friday, September 11, saw the participation of six Uttar Pradesh students who had been ordered by the Meghalaya High Court to undertake community service over the vandalism of a homestay.
An FIR was registered against the students in connection with the incident. The high court later quashed the FIR after the students reached a Rs 2.06 lakh settlement with the homestay proprietor.
Under the settlement, the students paid compensation to the proprietor and offered an unconditional apology for their conduct. Two of them were additionally directed by the court to pay Rs 25,000 each to the proprietor within a week and complete six days of community service.
The pair spent the first three days at the Sikh Centre Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Lachumiere starting September 8.
The remaining three days were completed on Friday through Jiva Cares’ Project Operation Clean-Up, with the students taking part in cleanliness activities in Shillong’s city centre.
The cleanliness programme is among the activities carried out by the project, which also looks after flowers and waste bins in the city.
The high court has directed the public prosecutor to submit a report on whether the community service was completed satisfactorily. Compliance with the court’s directions will be recorded when the matter is taken up on September 15.
