Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Friday called for collective efforts to protect the state’s rivers, aquatic biodiversity, forests and cultural heritage, saying the region’s waterways are closely linked to its history, traditions and way of life.

Mein was speaking at the Second Edition of Nadi Utsav, an initiative dedicated to the conservation of rivers, aquatic flora and fauna, and the biodiversity that sustains the region’s natural ecosystems.

He said rivers and streams are not merely sources of water but living ecosystems that support diverse forms of life and are deeply connected with the region’s history, culture and traditions.

“The lifestyle of our tribal people is deeply associated with nature, and we have lived with nature for ages; therefore, efforts must be made to protect and conserve the water and forests,” he said.Mein called for collective efforts to conserve biodiversity, prevent illegal fishing and hunting, and rejuvenate streams and water bodies.

Describing Nadi Utsav as a humble beginning, he said the initiative reflects the vision and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards rejuvenating and strengthening ecosystems.

He expressed confidence that with greater public participation, Nadi Utsav would be expanded and organised on a much larger scale in the coming years.

The culmination of the festival at TaKonmu, also known as Tungnamphi at Noichenam (Tengapani), holds deep cultural and historical significance. The sacred site has long been associated with the Tai Khamti community.

It serves as a place of worship and prayer and was also an important historic route for trade and barter with Sadiya.

Mein said conservation must go beyond protecting the natural environment and also cover the preservation of cultural heritage, traditions and historical connections that have evolved alongside the region’s rivers and waterways.

He urged all stakeholders and the people to work together to safeguard the region’s rivers, aquatic biodiversity and cultural heritage for future generations.

The event was attended by ZPC Namsai, Chau Sujana Namchoom, DC Namsai, Lobsang Tsering, monks, community leaders and youths.
