Doomdooma: The Tinsukia district administration has directed all government and private schools to strictly adhere to prescribed limits on the weight of students’ school bags.
Education Department officials on Wednesday conducted inspections at several schools across the district and physically weighed students’ school bags to check compliance with the directive.
Officials said the restrictions have been introduced to safeguard students’ health and well-being. Schools have been instructed to ensure that children are not made to carry books or other materials beyond the prescribed limits.
Under the norms, students of Classes I and II are allowed to carry school bags weighing no more than 1.5 kg.
For students in Classes III to V, the permissible weight has been set between 2 kg and 3 kg. Students of Classes VI and VII can carry bags weighing up to 4 kg.
The maximum permissible weight has been fixed at 4.5 kg for students of Classes VIII and IX, while Class X students can carry bags weighing up to 5 kg.
The district administration has asked schools to implement the guidelines strictly and avoid requiring students to bring unnecessary textbooks, notebooks and other materials to school.
Officials reiterated that keeping school bags within the prescribed limits is essential to protect students’ health and prevent the physical strain associated with carrying excessively heavy bags.
