North Lakhimpur: Khora Baruah Bhaona, a nearly two-century-old folk performance depicting the birth of Lord Krishna, was staged at Maj Jalbhari village in Lakhimpur’s Dhakuakhana sub-district on Janmashtami night on Friday.
The traditional performance was held at the historic 14 Prasangia Mahapurushia Naamghar and featured performers without conventional mythological costumes. Instead, banana leaves were used as coverings, with the enactment following a distinctive rhythm of musical beats and coordinated movements.
Khora Baruah Bhaona forms the middle portion of the mythological play Krishna Janma Yatra, written by Sri Sri Gopal Ata, a disciple of 16th-century Vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Madhavdeva.
According to organisers, the 14 Prasangia Mahapurushia Naamghar has preserved and staged the tradition since its foundation in 1830.
