Imphal: Unidentified miscreants hurled a bomb at the residence of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader K. Meghachandra in Bishnunaha, Yairipok, in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Thursday night, marking the second attack on an elected legislator in less than a week.
The blast occurred near the residential gate at around 8:15 pm on September 3, according to a statement issued by the CLP leader’s Public Relations Officer (PRO). No injuries were reported. The attackers and their motive remain unidentified.
Police reached the spot soon after the incident, conducted a search operation and registered a case. Meghachandra condemned the incident, particularly its occurrence near a crowded residential area, and questioned the motive behind the attack.
The incident came days after a suspected hand grenade exploded at the residence of government spokesperson and MLA Sapam Ranjan in Konthoujam Mamang Leikai, Imphal West, on August 28 at around 1:30 am.
The blast damaged part of the western boundary wall of Ranjan’s residence, but no injuries were reported.
Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh visited the site following the August 28 incident, while local residents staged a sit-in protest condemning the attack.
Ranjan had also questioned the motive behind the incident, saying he had recently travelled to Delhi to discuss issues concerning Manipur with central leaders. He said he had no personal enemies and had not received any extortion demands from any organisation.
