Doomdooma: Tinsukia Police have arrested associate professor Nilim Jyoti Senapati, the third accused in the death of 26-year-old Chinmoy Jyoti Changmai, from Dhemaji on Monday night.
Senapati had been absconding for more than 100 hours after being named in the case. Changmai was found critically injured outside the JSB Spring Field residential complex in Tinsukia town on August 27 and later died while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
Changmai was initially taken to Tinsukia Civil Hospital before being shifted to AMCH.
The arrest follows the detention of two other accused, law student Ananya Senapati and her mother, former teacher Juhi Senapati, in connection with the case. The two women were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
According to the first information report (FIR) lodged by Changmai’s mother, Riturani Changmai, her son had gone to the residential complex after allegedly receiving a call from Ananya Senapati. The complaint alleges that an altercation took place inside the building and that Changmai was pushed from an upper floor.
The allegations are yet to be established. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Changmai’s injuries and death and are examining evidence and questioning people connected with the case.
A case was registered at Tinsukia Sadar Police Station under Sections 61(1)(a), 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
With Senapati in custody, investigators are expected to question him about the events preceding Changmai’s injuries and his alleged role in the incident. Police are also working to establish the sequence of events inside the residential complex on August 27.
Changmai’s mother, Riturani Changmai, has sought justice for her son.
“I want justice for my son,” she said.
